AI reaches the director before it reaches the graduate.

Australian employers write AI into 34 of 169 director specs, 20.1%. At entry level they write it into 8 of 608, 1.3%. Both cells come from the same 3,240 live Australian specs, read on 14 September 2026.

That is a design decision, not a hiring accident. The same organisations that name AI in a director's remit leave it out of the specs they write for the roles closest to the work it changes.

The graduate intake is where judgement used to be formed. Anyone reading this as a shortage of senior AI skills has it backwards: the record shows AI named where authority already exists, and unwritten where it does not.

Nobody decides to close a ladder. It closes when no one rewrites the bottom rung.
